FSA - Foundation Skills Assessment

Dear Parents/Guardians:

FSA - Foundation Skills Assessment

As you may know, the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) will be administered to students throughout the province in grades 4 and 7. The assessment will be carried out between January 20 and February 20, 2015.

The FSA is a Ministry of Education assessment tool intended to measure student proficiency in reading, writing and numeracy based on the BC curriculum. The assessment examines core skills taught from the start of a child’s school career to the current grade level. The FSA provides only a “snapshot” of student proficiency at one point in time and so it is only one of many indicators we use in School District 64 to determine how your child is progressing in relation to provincial learning outcomes.

Here is some information about FSA administration in School District 64:

  • The FSA will be administered in our school district. All students in grades 4 and 7, except those very few students excluded by the principal for reasons permitted under Ministry of Education policy, are expected to participate. Principals will notify parents of any student whose Individual Education Plan documents a rationale for exclusion from FSA.
  • Parents may request that principals excuse their children from the FSA in the event of family emergency, extended illness or extenuating circumstances. Contact your principal if you think any of these criteria apply to your child.
  • Students who do not take part in one or more of the components of FSA will be scored as "performance level unknown".
  • The FSA includes both paper and on-line activities.
  • Online portions of the numeracy and reading assessments will be completed on school computers that have already been set up to ensure a smooth online session.
  • Results will be shared with parents/guardians as soon as they are released by the Ministry of Education. This will likely be in late May or June.

Please contact your school principal if you have any questions about the FSA or check the following BC Parent's PAC webpage: www.bccpac.bc.ca/resources/fsa-information-kit-parents

Sincerely,
